Mark still says Facebook is not for sale

I remember reading an article a while back where Mark Zuckerberg (creator of Facebook) talks about how he just likes building things and wouldn’t really consider selling Facebook. Times have changed, and at the same time, I do believe he has a lot of ideas to grow Facebook. But seriously, one thing that bothers me is their evaluation of the company as being worth $8 Billion dollars or more. Let’s face it, $8B is a lot to ask for a social networking site. At the end of the day, it is just another social networking site that can be quite easily replicated.

Facebook turned down a buyout of $1 Billion from Yahoo. Fine, I am sure after Google bought out YouTube for $1.6B, a lot of other startups will be trying to up their worth. But $8B for Facebook is just a bit ridiculous to me. Mind you, most of Facebook’s user base are college/university students. Another issue is how to efficiently monetize Facebook with it’s sort of user base in order to recoup all that money if they get bought out.

My 2 cents to Mark if you read this, take an offer and cash out. All the social network sites have their periods, they all go and come, so now is the time. I’m sure there is another Facebook in the works somewhere out there.

Your short sighted article is devoid of anything of value, much like the rest of your blog. Case in point: “Mind you, most of Facebook’s user base are college/university students.” If you knew anything at all about advertising you’d know that that demographic is highly coveted and valuable. Your post is pure drivel.

I understand that the demographic is valuable. I still think $8B is a lot for such a site. It could be easily replicated. Fine, other copy cats would most likely not achieve the same level of popularity simply because Facebook has made a name in that arena. My thing is if he really means Facebook is not for sale or he is just saying that, but waiting for the right bidder with the right price.
