Adobe Apollo buzz…
Seriously you gotta love Adobe, and some of the kick ass products they come up with. From the design suite of Photoshop, Illustrator…to the web tools like Flash, Flex, Dreamweaver and so on. Now here comes Apollo. I have been watching the Apollo project closely for quite some time now and looking forward to the first release sometime in early 2007. I think Apollo will drive some amazing innovations in terms of bridging the gap between the web and the desktop environment.
Apollo is Adobe’s new cross-operating system runtime that allows developers to build Rich Internet Applications for both the web and user desktops. An example of another runtime is Java. Java is OS independent. But Adobe takes Apollo to a whole new level. Imagine being able to take your internet applications (built with either Flash, Flex, AJAX, JavaScript and/or HTML), and building a desktop application version of them while taking advantage of user resources instead of tasking the server.
I have seen screen shots of some project ideas coming out of Apollo. Out of them all, only 1 has really blown me away. It is called the “San Dimas” project. San Dimas is an eBay desktop prototype built on Apollo platform. Imagine being able to tap into the entire eBay web application right from your desktop…über cool!
Though there are no plans to release San Dimas, it goes to show the sort of innovations that we can expect once Apollo arrives. You can also check out the blog of Ryan Stewart for more info on San Dimas.
For further info on Apollo, there is a podcast up on TalkCrunch by Mike Arrington. The podcast is a 37 minute interview with Kevin Lynch (VP and CSA of Adobe) about Apollo.

[…] Moving along, some may or may not remember Adobe Apollo; now officially released as Adobe AIR. Adobe AIR is a runtime that is Operating System independent which allows applications built for the web to be able to run offline. Now that Adobe owns Buzzword, it is more than likely that this application will be ported to the AIR platform. So what would this mean? It will mean: […]
