YSL, for the Cologne freaks in all of us!

Sometime last year, while strutting through The Bay on Queen in Toronto, I got a sample of new YSL L’Homme fragrance. I really liked it….and I mean a lot. The week after, I was going to the U.S. on a business trip, so I figured I could get it over there since it would be much cheaper. So I left for my business trip in the U.S. During the periods that I had time, I checked everywhere for this fragrance, and I do mean everywhere. I went to Macy’s, Saks Fifth Ave, Neiman Marcus, Lord & Taylor, Bloomingdales, Cologne Stands in the mall, Mom and Pop shop……..every damn place, you name it! I could not find this fragrance in the U.S. of A. I just gave up and waited until I was able to come back to Toronto. As soon as I arrived in Toronto last week, I got myself to The Bay on Queen again as quickly as I could and still found this fragrance there. I bought the big bottle and got a free YSL bag with it. The moral of the story is that I was quite shocked that this fragrance didn’t seem to be carried in the U.S. for reasons beyond my explanation. This is one of the best fragrances I know, and even those who have smelled it totally agree. I prefer mild and cool scents for my cologne, and the YSL just fit right in there along with my D&G. If anyone has any clue as to why this seems to be in Canada and not in the U.S….post away!

On another note, I noticed something about my colognes as they sat next to each other on the table …look at the color difference in the picture of all 4 (from L to R: Lagerfeld Classic, Pi by Givenchy, YSL L’Homme and D&G Eau De Toilette). Color change is Orange for the Lagerfeld, Golden Yellow for the Givenchy, faint Green for the YSL and D&G. Here is what you do not know, D&G is my favorite for the mild and cool scent (the ladies luv this)….this was why I got the YSL to begin with. The fragrance of the YSL was just like that of the D&G. Come to look at both bottles now, I see they are literally the same color. I have no Bachelor’s degree in fragrances or anything, but it got me thinking if the color of a fragrance could give you an idea of how it would smell.

The Lagerfeld in Orange is the strongest fragrance, and has some pinch to it. As explained, the YSL and D&G are a lot more milder and cool scented. The Givenchy is somewhere in between with its own twist of pinch. Based on this analysis, it seems like the more you go into the Orange zone, you will get strong fragrances. Yellow just has its own thing going on in between. So warmer colors portray those attributes. Cooler colors like blue and green should be milder fragrances with the cool effect. Going back to another cologne I really liked was Aramis Life, which falls inside the cool factor. Like I said, I am no professor or Chemist, but just a little observation!

I’m surprised L&T didn’t carry it. They usually have EVERYTHING at their counter!
