My Facebook Rant!

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

Alright, I enjoy using Facebook and the neat features it provides. But seriously there are some things about FB that just grinds my gears.

(1) Why can’t I belong to more that 1 network?
Before anyone says “yes you can”….no, you can’t. I don’t mean location + school + workplace networks. I mean location + location + location networks all in parallel. Due to the nature of my job, I move a lot and my duration in each place could vary anywhere from 1 month to 1 year. I would like my primary network to remain as Toronto, but when I travel to other locations on project, I would like to add secondary networks such as New York, Chicago and Atlanta etc….as well, while I am in town. When you try to add a new location as primary network, FB will tell you that your existing network will be dropped. Some of us actually have valid usage for multiple networks.

(2) So I can’t have more than 1 network which is dumb, but why do I have to wait more than 60 days if I do change my network twice, which is even dumber?
This is pretty dumb. Why place such a restriction. 60 days might not sound like a long time, but it really is. I have had projects that lasted 2 months, in this case I would miss meeting people in those networks.

(3) When viewing single photos, why is there no “Back to Photos” link?
This might sound like such an irrelevant issue, but I really do find myself looking for this all the time when navigating through pictures on my friend’s albums. When looking at single photos page by page, there is a “Back to Album” link, but no “Back to Photos” link. You have to click “Back to Album” first, then the “Back to Photos” link is visible, and then you can click “Back to Photos”. I find many times that I just want to go “Back to Photos” quickly when viewing single photos. Cutting a click rate by 50% might not sound like a lot, but when you do itoften, it does add up, which I do all the time.

(4) What is up with FSX?
I don’t know who to blame for this, FB or the developers of Fantasy Stock Exchange (FSX). My Net worth is different all the time and changes as it is supposed to when in FSX. But when looking at the application from my profile, my net worth has been static for like the last 1 week, when in actual fact it has changed??

(5) What is up with the quick blackouts?
Again, not sure where this issue might be coming from, but often times, going to any page results in a “Page cannot be displayed” error. A refresh fixes it.

Nokia disappoints!…bluetooth failure.

Sunday, November 4th, 2007

Something happened to me last week with my Nokia phone, and let’s just say this has got me quite disappointed. I have written many posts about how great Nokia phones are; from the phone quality to the friendly and intuitive UI.

I have had my Nokia 6260 for almost 3 years now and it has worked great. Last week, I went to a T-mobile shop to pick up a bluetooth headset. Lately I have been having a lot of conference calls for work. I really needed to go hands-free with all the long calls I’ve had to date. After I purchased the headset, I enabled the bluetooth for the first time ever on my phone. I followed the instructions, enabled both devices and established a connection between the devices. I was up and running!

Three days later, I noticed my headset was not enabled on my phone. I tried to reconnect, but it still would not work. I thought the headset had a problem, but then noticed that the headset indicators were properly flashing and everything else was fine. Besides, it was a brand new headset. I then decided to check my phone and noticed the bluetooth was somehow shut off. I proceeded to enable bluetooth, then I get the error “Unable to perform bluetooth operation”. I knew right away that this was not a good sign. Worse still, the issue seemed to be with my phone. I checked the manual and Nokia support site and could not find anything useful about this error.

With no luck, I went to my good friend Google and did some research about this error. Lo and behold, the big G never disappoints. I found a good number of various forums and postings of users with different models of Nokia phones who have gotten the same error. There was a lot of information I had to filter through to get what I wanted from all the various resources, but here is the bottom line:

  • It is an Issue with Nokia handsets. I don’t know how many models this issue soans, but a good number of users have seen them on various models
  • It is a hardware related issue. Specifically, a problem with the bluetooth IC in the Nokia handsets.
  • If you ever get this error, it is irreparable. No soft/hard reset will even help. The only options are (1) Send your phone back the nearest Nokia service center to get it fixed (2) Find a mobile phone repair shop that could possibly replace the bluetooth IC, if they know what they are doing.

So now, I am left with a brand new headset which has become useless. I am also left with a phone which has no bluetooth functionality and whose functionality I was able to use for only 3 days! I was very very pissed and disappointed. At this point, it didn’t make any sense for me to consider wasting time, energy and resources to get this repaired. I’ve been contemplating buying a new phone soon, so I would rather put that money towards a new phone. I have always loved Nokia phones and buy only Nokia, but I am quite worried as to how many Nokia phones/models have this defect? My next phone was going to be the E61i. I don’t want to have to buy a new $500 phone, only to have the bluetooth crap out in 3 days!!

If anyone else has faced the issue, I would like to know the time frame of when this error started to show up. I am curious to know if it is a consistent defect and what model of phone you use. I feel like Nokia could be somehow held accountable, since this seems to be a common defect in the product they are releasing. I would also like to know from owners of the E61i, who are using bluetooth, if anyone has faced this problem yet?
