Function Designs goes Live!

Tuesday, November 28th, 2006

Function Designs, the website that the Color Coded team put together for artist Nicole Alves has finally gone live. This has been an interesting project, albeit one of our best and fun projects too. The site had a couple of overhauls back and forth, but I think this is it for now.

From the initial concept, we went back to the drawing boards again and again in order to come up with a good and functional layout. I really have to give it to Nicole for her creative input and focus as a client.

Coding wise, we really implemented a few neat tricks. The picture galleries are all custom built and gets put together on-the-fly, as the page loads. We had to even modify the AJAX lightbox a bit due to an issue with the custom gallery. After building the gallery we noticed that lightbox did not load any images. Here is why: lightbox reads images before the page loads. Since our gallery gets built on-the-fly using innerHTML, lightbox bypasses the images. Thanks to the skilled Pman, he looked through the lightbox code and found out that we need to call a lightbox function again in our code after the gallery gets written. There are still some final tweaks and updates to be made to the site, but right now…it is functional.

Anyway, it was a really good experience for the team. This is technically our first official fully completed project. We look forward to more projects in the future.

My TTC ride this morning…

Tuesday, November 28th, 2006

What an interesting ride this morning. First I was at the stop waiting for the streetcar, then this woman was at the stop with a whole bunch of us. I think she had terex syndrome. This woman was yelling obscenities galore. You name it she said it. Worst part is that it was a bit cold outside and the streetcar was taking quite a while to arrive.

To make up for it I guess, there was a gorgeous lady standing at the stop too. Here is the funny part, she gets on the streetcar and takes a seat. Since she had a backpack on, she didn’t want to take it off, so she took up some of both seats…and the streetcar was very full mind you. Then this guy just sits next to her and uses his body force to push her in. Then she gives him a quick “WTF” look, and used her shoulders to nudge him over a bit. They both went back and forth at each other, trying to play it civil on the streetcar. But the looks they gave each other says it all, the guy was very pissed, probably thinking..”take your friggin’ backpack off lady”!

Then I get off my stop and off to work.

Ali G meets the NBA

Sunday, November 26th, 2006

This is soooo funny, I just had to share this. Ali G drops in on the NBA.

The funniest is the interview with Kobe Bryant:
Ali: How many springs does an official ball have in it?
Kobe: How many springs?…It doesn’t have any springs in it
Ali: Why does it bounce then?
Kobe: It’s air, there is air in the ball
Ali: Well there is air in this room, howcome this room ain’t bouncin’?
Kobe: …!
Ali: …!

WordPress and Video embedding

Sunday, November 26th, 2006

A couple of days ago, when I wrote the post for The music just ain’t the same, I wanted to include a YouTube video in the post. Since I just started the whole WordPress thing, I found out there were issues with embedding videos. My site got very screwed up, lost it’s style and just looked plain weird.

Yet again, I go to my friend google, for some answers. I found this video plugin for embedding different videos into WordPress, called Viper Video Quicktags. Apparently many people had the same issue. But this plugin works like a charm. So easy and very powerful.
