How to get Oracle Apps running on your Windows Vista Machine

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

Everytime I try to launch Oracle Apps on my new laptop running Vista, my browser just hangs and then crashes. I could not figure out what the problem was and there was no way I would downgrade back to XP. As usual, I did some googling to find others who might have the same issue and possibly a solution. Lo and behold I did, right in the Oracle Forum actually.

So here are the steps to get Oracle Apps running on your Vista PC:

  1. Install the latest Java Runtime Environment, which was Java 6 Update 3 when i did this: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  2. After the JRE installation, go to the directory: C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_02\bin\client
  3. Copy this file: jvm.dll to the directory “C:\Program Files\Oracle\Jinitiator\bin\hotspot”, where is your version of JInitiator.
  4. Remember to always backup before performing the above steps.

Now you should have Apps properly running on Vista

Create, Collaborate and Share Org Charts using CogMap

Saturday, May 19th, 2007

I found this site called CogMap which allows you to create Org Charts. CogMap is built o’n the AJAX framework. When I first used it I thought it was Flash, then later realized it was AJAX. For an AJAX site with such functionality, it is actually quite responsive. Sometimes you get an occasional lag during charting, but nothing serious. CogMap is also built as a Wiki for Org Charts, whereby anyone can create their own Chart, edit it and others can helo maintain it as well. When you save changes, there is a version control window that keeps track of your changes. So you have to ability to revert back to a previous version.

I decided to create my own Org Chart on CogMap, but with a twist. Instead of creating Org Charts of people relationships in an Organization, I created an Org Chart of Products within Oracle. For anyone who works in this field, you know how large Oracle’s Product base is and spans so many applications. It is really impossible to keep track of them all. Below is a screenshot of my Org Chart called “Oracle Products”.

It is a work in progress. For anyone interested in viewing the entire chart, just go to Cogmap.com and search for “Oracle Products”. Registration is free and it provides a quick and easy way to create Org Charts. The only downside to this is that not only is is Public, but anyone can make changes (Wiki).

Run Oracle Apps in Firefox using JInitiator

Sunday, November 26th, 2006

The other day, while working on Oracle Apps, I got very frustrated with all the issues and errors that come with Internet Explorer.  I really missed my Firefox.  Our instructor said to use IE because apparently, it is properly configured for Apps.  I thought I couldn’t be the only one out there who wanted to use my Firefox and ventured on doing some googling.

I found this fix ironically in the Oracle Forums.  The solution is as follows:

  1. Navigate to c:\<...>\Oracle\JInitiatorXXXX\bin directory and copy the NPJinitXXXX.dll, where XXXX is just the version # of JInitiator
  2. Now paste the DLL file into the C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins directory
  3. Restart Firefox, and this will do the trick

I can vouch that it works, I did it and can now enjoy my web experience using Firefox, when I’m running Oracle Apps.
